Custom Steel Handrails for Natural-Stone Stairways
Two custom steel handrails, field measured and fabricated for irregular natural-stone stairways at a South Lyon home, then powder coated and installed.

The need
A South Lyon property had two natural-stone stairways — one a long flight up to the deck, one a short run beside the driveway — and no handrail on either. Natural stone gives a stock railing nothing consistent to land on: the rises differ, the treads are uneven, and every post lands somewhere slightly different. Both railings had to be built around the stairs that were already there.
Work performed
- Field measured both stairways on site before any steel was cut
- Fabricated two handrails from 1-1/2-inch square steel tubing
- Set the rail geometry from the existing stone rather than a standard rise
- Fabricated custom transitions where the rails meet the upper landings
- Welded round steel base plates at each post for anchoring into stone
- Drew custom end caps in CAD and had them CNC-cut to suit the tubing's radiused corners
- Finished both railings in black powder coat
- Installed and anchored both railings on site
The result
Two handrails built for these stairways and no others — geometry taken from the stone itself, a black powder-coated finish, and end caps made to fit the tubing rather than forced onto it.
